EpigraMarch conclusion

It's over. We did it and while there's certainly a lot to be improved next time around, casualties were kept to a minimum. If you cannot be fucked to read through a whole month of largely unpolished poetry produced under time pressure, my personal favourite from the challenge was day 7's Osmogenesia though a number of the othere ones also have their charms.

And then they kill you, Ianthe and the Impression.Zone zine

In the spirit of that recent magnus video i decided to write a little conceptual horror story as I labour away on larger projects. I also drew a pretty cool Ianthe Tridentarius from the Locked Tomb to somehwat fill out the misc-art-section of the webstite. Aditionally, while i assume that all of you have read Aisle Five by now, it got published in the Impression.Zone zine, which i intend to keep contributing to.

Exorcist Tipline

Exorcist Tipline is a short interactive fiction about a traveling exorcist solving paranormal mysteries. Made by Distracted Mosfet, Asha a.m and me for ECTOCOMP 2025, we technically had a month to finish this game but due to a variety of more quotidian horrors it ended up being completed in closer to a week. Still, it's an intresting little piece, we might expand upon it later and you can play it right now in your browser. If you like it you may even want to vote for it in ECTOCOMP. I may even be happy if you do that.

An incident in isle five

I would like to say that i drew a comic, though that would likely evoke entirely the wrong impression. It is more correct to say that i had a nervous breakdown some months ago and storyboarded something. Then, for a while i was too sane to actually do the idea justice. Now i am finding myself, for better and worse, back amidst those halls which know all names but yours and so found the wherewithal to put lines and colours to said feverdream. Content warnings for needles, blood and fairly mild body horror

To Remember The Sun

A short story about the contents of a satellite and probably one of the most conceptually interesting things i've written. My original draft for the story was concerned with the actual happenings that the second-to-last paragraph of this one glosses over and then decided to write it from the perspective of a far off ovserver who knows nothing instead. Does it work? Who knows, but it was fun to do.

Bio-Ephemeris

Critter, craning neck with awe
At havens cut from feeble law
And stumbles on unsteady feet
Through stories, old and incomplete

It's sleeping badly, waking worse
A sheep soul clad in wolven furs
And baring teeth it cut by hand
To guard this hoard of haunted sand

Still glad for moments soon forgot
Errata agnate Ararat
So future, past and passing shapes
May not be bound by rules for apes

May blink away the rising tide
In gestures long undignified
And longer still with stifled rage
Cast ink to judge each passing age

To wear some day the floral wreath
Some blades the righteous may not sheathe
A critter feeding pigeons bread
To not lose hope and not lose head

Hopefully there will be a more substantial update before i leave for dublin on saturday. If not then soon after. on the slim chance that any of you happen to be in dublin between the 13th and the 15th: hit me up, we can grab a coffee.

EpigraMarch and assorted miscellany

Setting up my own spin on Escapiril for next year and hoping people will want to join. In other news i added a few names to the classpecting guide, added the "playing ball" item to the users manual and the "beowolf cluster" item to the glossary. Also minorly updated the robots.txt file and fixed some typos. More significant things are in the works, happy pride!

Escapril 2025 retrospective and poetry restructuring

One more escapril behind me and while I had the experience of really wanting to go to sleep but needing to still write something a lot more frequently than i would have liked to, i did manage to persevere and am happy with the results. The month produced fewer individual pieces that i feel very strongly positively about than 2024 did. That's a result of having less time to scrap a first idea and start over from scratch, but training the muscle that just gets the thing done anyway is not exactly a meritless exercize to my mind. On a more macro view there's a lot more genuinely disciplined metre this time around as opposed to the slapdash drifting in and out of amphibrach that characterized last year and it's not like there weren't any gems here. If you're only gonna read one of them I recommend day 22's "In the distance, a small shape". Now that the month is wrapped up, the Escapril2025 page will persist and exist alongside a new Escapril2024 page. These are both complete and can be accessed via the poems page which now only contains a curated though extensive selection from each challenge.

The Quaternary sector - Mothey for Nothing

A hopefully intuitive answer for why everything is a fucking scam now. This is an article that I promised to some friends months ago, but which took some time to get out since any time I looked at the first draft I couldn't decide whether the style I had chosen to write it in was overwrought in a fun way or overwrought in an exhausting way. Definitely made to be read as a script, so a video-version might follow in the indeterminate future.

Hurtbox Calibration

Added a section on a very high-effort social debugging strat i had to develop a few months ago to the users manual, fixed a few typos in the watch article and the glossary.
Hurtbox Calibration
Experimental. I've only really done group calibration once and as such am neither very practised in it, nor very confident that this actually works. Mostly a last ditch recovery tactic when conversations within a group have grown intensely taxing, daunting and dysfunctional due to repeated costly failures or periods of prolonged interpersonal stress, while not communicating is not an acceptable outcome to anyone involved for a number of emotional or practical reasons. The scheme goes thus: Any time a situation, statement, word-choice etc deals you any amount of emotional damage, however slight, you flag it publicly and immediately in the form of a severity assessment (mild to extreme, one to ten, whatever scale or granularity suits you), and a short explanation of why you felt hurt, if you have one. We don't always have perfect insight into why we feel certain things immediately and saying "I don't know" or making clear that you are speculating about possible reasons is perfectly acceptable. You don't have to hash out what happened and how to avoid it in the future right then and there (in my own run this was somewhat rare actually), unless the offended party calls for it. They may also call for a specific different time to talk this through.
I believe that hurtbox calibration is a good debugging technique because it forces you to build a better model of where people's sensitivities, sometimes including your own, actually lie. In high stress scenarios it is common to dig oneself stubbornly into false subconscious theories of the dynamics at play which cause you to do harm repeatedly without noticing and to "make concessions" that no one is actually asking for while growing frustrated about the fact that they are going unappreciated. Consistent, immediate feedback on where the sore spots actually are and how your tight-held model is wrong seems like a good way out of those trauma-frozen patterns. It is also a very immediate way of seeing how everyone is taking damage, not just you, and especially how some people are getting damaged by you. Lastly, bringing up every single ache every single time makes you feel heard, because you quite literally are, and not feeling heard can be among the most damaging facets of such situations. The downside of hurtbox calibration is that every single interaction for a while will take twice as long at a minimum, and actually flagging your ouchies, especially if they are minor, sound silly, or if you cannot explain them properly is hard and exhausting. More accurately, many of the items you'll have to raise would be minor in isolation while being excruciating in the context of all the other crap that has built up. They are a light slap onto a broken rib, and that is a perfectly reasonable thing to complain about. It takes a lot of vigilance and a lot of usually-unacceptable interruptions, and especially if you are the sort of person who habitually (and maybe even with some pride) tanks large amounts of pain silently in order to make things go smoothly, it will be severely ego-dystonic. If you are that type of person however, you are the most likely to have ended up in this spot in the first place.

Reunion

Wrote a poem, added madesuki to the collection of site-buttons and updated the bookshelf

You once-fearsome yearning
You feverish whisper
Since back when we parted
What lives have you led?

What loss laced your movements
What lust licked your canines
Has unceasing hunger
Been keeping you fed?

Oh where are my manners
Still tar-black, no sugar?
Still scalding your tongue
As you tilt it all back?

These questions must bore you
To leave your lips quiet
Come what stopped your fingers
So dead in their track?

You have nothing you say?
Only objects and comfort
No horrible spark
burning holes in its slave?

What weight bends your ribcage?
What bills pay your lodging?
What barrenness calls you
To shop for a grave?

Are you held or still holding
beheld or beholden
To masters or morals
Or stories you've told
As a youth?
As a soldier?
As days came and passed you
You've grown like this coffee
Quite bitter and cold
